Focus

We’ve all been there.  The work at hand requires clear thinking and an organized approach to complicated issues.  Your phone buzzes, the conversation in the next room takes over your thoughts, your belly rumbles reminding you that you haven’t eaten…..

Especially in law, focusing on the task in front of you is the key to doing your best work. Studies show that trying to do many things at once leads to costly errors. As lawyers who apply law to facts everyday and make important, sometimes life changing decisions for our clients, focus is vital.

Here’s some tips for keeping your mind focused:

  1. Sleep, eat well, exercise.  Without these basic building blocks your depleted brain cannot work its best.

  2. Ditch digitalia.  Cognitively, just the presence of your phone, even if it’s turned off, lowers your ability to think clearly!  Silence notifications and put it away.

  3. Create a work routine. Same time, same place, tells your mind that it’s time to perform.

  4. Do the hardest task first. Putting the most complicated matter behind you creates a sense of accomplishment and momentum for other, less taxing work.
